Court Delays Rep. Jefferson`s Trial Until Late February
A federal judge reluctantly agreed on Friday to delay next month`s scheduled
corruption trial Rep. William J. Jefferson , D-La., by about six weeks.

The trial now will begin at 10 a.m., Feb. 25. It had been scheduled for Jan.
16. Jefferson had sought a delay of four to six months.

Jefferson, re-elected last year to a ninth term despite the pending criminal
charges, is accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes
in exchange for helping to broker business deals in Africa. He faces 16
charges, including soliciting bribes, racketeering, money laundering,
obstruction of justice, wire fraud, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign
Corrupt Practices Act.

Jefferson`s attorney, Robert P. Trout, had argued in a motion seeking the
delay that the number and complexity of the charges, along with the volume
of documents and recorded conversations, required additional review time by
the defense.

In a brief filed Dec. 12, federal prosecutors argued that Jefferson hired
his criminal attorney more than two years ago and had access to assistance
from the House general counsel during the FBI`s investigation.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III denied Jefferson`s request for a longer
delay as he set the Feb. 25 date for the start of the trial.

"That gives you an additional six-plus weeks, and you`ll simply have to get
it done," Ellis told Trout.

Jefferson, 60, has been accused of accepting numerous forms of illegal
payments, including stocks, retainers and consulting fees. He also is
accused of offering a bribe to a Nigerian official during a July 2005
meeting at the official`s Potomac, Md., residence.

He has said he is innocent of the charges, which involve an alleged scheme
to help a Kentucky-based telecommunications firm, iGate, land a contract
worth millions of dollars with Nigeria. The lawmaker is accused of accepting
more than $400,000 from iGate and other companies in return for promoting
business ventures.

Jefferson also is the subject of an ethics investigation in the House that
is on hold pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

The Republican candidates are crashing on the rocks. This is because
their most fundamental Reagonomic argument has recently become null
and void.

That is, TRICKLE DOWN no longer works. It has become TRICKLE
OFFSHORE. For example, George Bush has given multi-billionaire Bill
Gates billions of dollars in tax cuts. The Reagonomic argument is
that Gates will now use these billions in Bushian generousity to
create wonderful new jobs.

Well, guess what? Gates HAS created a huge number of new jobs. But
they have been in India and China, and other cheap-labor countries.
Huge numbers of American computer programmers and engineers have lost
their jobs as Gates used this windfall tax benefit to build new
offices and factories in Asia.

There is another LAW here. The richer a person is, when they receive
a tax windfall, the more likely they are to spend that windfall
OUTSIDE of the USA.

This is the reason why the American economy is getting so bad.
TRICKLE DOWN no longer works, and in fact, it actually ENCOURAGES the
exportation of existing American jobs.

This is why people like Romney, Guiliani and McCain are totally
crashing on the rocks. Their arguments are hollow and ABSURD because
they are based on the conditions in the 1980`s.

Sure, TRICKLE DOWN worked under Reagan. But that was before the
development of globalism, NAFTA, VOIP phones, and the Internet.

The Republicans are going to have to revamp their ideas, because
TRICKLE DOWN is BS. It doesn`t work anymore.

In fact, the only thing that WILL work is TRUELY GROWING the economy.
And you do not grow the economy by planting 100 year old elm trees.
You grow the economy by planting seeds.

The only solution that will work is GRASS ROOTS stimulation. Bush
seems to dimly understand since he is considering giving a tax rebate
to ALL people. That is a good idea that will work.

The Republicans want to cut taxes? How about ELIMINATING TAXES on the
first $50,000 of income? Now THAT is a TAX CUT. But I doubt that any
Republicans will sign on to that!!! That doesn`t do much for the
multi-billionaires.

Title: Lobbyists Take a Soak, On Us ....by Jim Hightower

Here’s a startling tally: 13,000.

That’s the number of corporate lobbyists in Washington, DC. Adding to their clout are the thousands of corporate executives who jet into our nation’s capital city periodically for closed-door sessions with key lawmakers and regulators. If you wonder why such crying public needs as health care for all and environmental protection are constantly bent to serve private corporate interests, look to this army of hired guns and executive-suite dandies.

But let’s concede that influence-peddling can be hard work. Such tasks as glad-handing and passing out campaign contributions—that’ll tucker you out.

That’s why the Ritz-Carlton is so crucial to the system. This swank hotel is a Washington oasis for frazzled lobbyists and executives. For one thing, no tacky tourists are there to bother the swells, since room rates at the Ritz start at $599 a night and run up to $5,800. Then there’re the little touches.

For example, where else do guests get a “Bath Menu” in their room? “Choose from an assortment of butler-drawn baths to ease your concerns,” says the menu. “A personal attendant will be pleased to draw the bath of your choice.”

The menu offers The Inaugural Bath, with mineral salts “from the depths of the bright blue sea”; The Capitol Bath, with lavender, sea salts, and a libation of your choice; and The Cherry Blossom Bath—actually, rose petals are substituted for cherry, but you do get a glass of champagne and strawberries.
